During its startup phase (the “learning phase”), or for those startups that are in areas where reactors are not permitted (such as for microgrids or vehicles), the reactor would be built into the “learning bed” (a communication word for a control bed) of the real reactor. This would allow a patient trial of the reactor core to be performed.
Designed in the early 1990s, the reactor would be grouped into three reactor zones, each operating at a different level of sophistication (similar to the Argonne and Princeton designs, for example).
Various sensors would be installed in the reactor for operation control and diagnostics. This would allow the design to be tried out in a safe environment, boosting the chances that it would work as expected, improving the reliability and safety of the reactor.
The reactor design would also have a water wall (or “cocoon”) with a membrane that protects the reactor and isolates it from the overlying waters. Due to the relatively short half-life of the fissionable uranium-235 and minor fission products, the reaction could easily be stopped by replacing the neutrons and the fission products with n-p noble gas mixtures or heavy water “recycling.” 7211a4ac4a
