If a projector works well on a screen in a dark environment indoors, you cannot expect it will work as well on the same sized screen outdoors. You will need a brighter projector for outdoor projection! Here's why: imagine sitting in a dimly lit theater. You can see just enough so that you can get to your seat without tripping and spilling your over-sized drink. But you can barely see the advertisements projected onto the screen. This is because projection surface is actually bouncing the light in the room back into your eyes, making the movie screen, and the image on it, appear much lighter than when the lights have been dimmed. Depending on the color temperature of the lights in the theater, the screen will reflects light-gray or an orangish pinkish color. Now look at the ads on the screen. Notice at that very moment the darkest portion of the projector's image never looks any darker than the light gray color of your projection surface. The blackest black you can see is actually that gray color. When the lights are turned off, and the screen is no longer reflecting ambient light, the projection image reveals deeper blacks. Suddenly the projected image quality has vastly improved. The difference you see is referred to as an improved contrast ratio. Outdoor environments often include a number of variables that can negatively effect your outdoor projector's ability to project a high quality image. Moonlight, streetlights, headlights, houselights, campfire light, a late sunset, or even bright starlight can all affect your image. Any kind of light will bounce off the projection surface back into your eyes, lightening the appearance of your outdoor movie screen. To pull off the perfect outdoor movie event, you will want your outdoor projection surface to appear black, not gray!

Dan is the Dark Skies Officer at the South Downs National Park Authority and International Dark Sky Reserve. He was responsible for creating and submitting the South Downs application to the IDA and continues to manage the National Parks delivery of dark skies. Dan uses his position to promote IDA messages, light pollution, and astronomical opportunities to the residents and visitors of the South Downs. Originally a Physicist with an interest in astrophysics, Dan has further degrees in Wildlife Management and a Masters in Environment, Policy, and Society, but has happily swapped his time as a ranger with a chainsaw to deliver dark skies outreach behind a telescope. Dan is actively involved in enhancing lighting policy in the UK and coordinates a UK Dark Sky partnership with protected landscape partners with the goal of developing specific policies for dark skies. There is also a growing movement against light pollution. Championed by dark sky advocates and bolstered by economic incentives, towns and parks around the globe are making strides to preserve night sky views. The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is the nonprofit lighting the way. It began 30 years ago in Arizona with two friends, an astronomer and a physician. Now it boasts a 66-chapter global network and hundreds of advocates working in their own localities to preserve dark skies.

As a case in point, normally conservative Utah leads the country in dark skies advocacy. It has 27 certified dark sky places, the most of any state. The University of Utah offers a minor in Dark Sky Studies, and earlier this year legislators debated creating a dark sky license plate.

Due to its low population, plethora of public lands, dry climate, and high elevation, the Colorado Plateau has excellent dark sky viewing. According to a 2013 report on the economic impact of dark skies, night-focused tourism could generate 52,000 new jobs and $2.5 billion in the region in a decade.

Why do advocates around the world act as evangelists for dark skies? What inspires citizens to work doggedly for years to preserve a view of the Milky Way in their towns? Why do people travel across the country to spend a couple of hours viewing an almost-pristine star scape?

If you want to see the moon and constellations: Bright full moons are the best bet for those with apprehensions about the dark or who want to go on a hike. Plus, the major planets and constellations are clear without so many other stars to overwhelm them.

The International Dark Sky Association has recognized the 218,000-acre national park in northern Minnesota as a dark sky park for its efforts to keep the park dark at night. The area has some of the darkest skies in the Midwest, which makes the night sky more visible to people on the ground.

Cook County is home to some of the darkest skies in the world. Every year, explorers, adventurers, artists and photographers from around the world travel to Cook County to experience the northern lights, the Milky Way, and the wonders of the northern night sky. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) has been named as one of only 15 certified International Dark Sky Sanctuaries in the world! And at over a million acres, it is the largest. But Tim Patterson, president of the Ridgway Area of Chamber of Commerce, said the organization chose to remain neutral on the application, because of the costs of compliance and the dark skies hampering the visibility of business signs as well as those designated for public safety.

The rise in interest among small towns in Colorado may have more to do with conservation instead of tourism, said Ryan Parker, a real estate agent and president of the Colorado dark-skies chapter. As more people move to our state, commuters looking for cheaper housing have overwhelmed nearby towns. Some towns, like Severance, have welcomed the change, and others have turned into mid-sized cities, such as Firestone, Frederick and Dacono.

Those small towns do welcome the tourism that could follow a designation, Parker said, and the skies are there waiting for them to be seen again. But those dark skies are also a return to values that he worries are lost to the non-natives moving here in droves.

I'm trying to decide between a 10" and 12" dob. I've been reading a lot of threads on the subject, but I haven't seen much discussion about the viewing differences under dark skies vs brighter skies.

I'm in a pretty dark area (about Bortle 3) and probably won't be transporting this scope much. Would the difference between a 10 and a 12 be more apparent or less apparent under rural skies, or doesn't it matter much? I expect there to be differing opinions about whether the viewing is significantly different between the two, but I'm wondering if the sky darkness makes a difference when comparing.

A good 10" or 12" is a lifetime telescope, something to use and keep no matter what other scopes enter the fold in the future. I'm sure you would be happy with either. In my experience though, the 12" is going to be a better instrument and will give you noticeably more under dark skies.

Owning both a 10 inch F/5 and a 12.5 inch, I find the differences significant and it has been some years since the 10 inch has traveled to dark skies. Side by side, the differences are not so subtle.. 2b1af7f3a8
